Abstract

Covering FIFA Corruption in a Small Island Developing State

This qualitative study entitled, Covering FIFA Corruption in a Small Island Developing State, examines the coverage by the Dominica News Online of the controversy involving former President of the Dominica Football Association, Patrick Roland John and Vice President of FIFA, Jack Warner surrounding FIFA’s banning of six Caribbean nationals in a bribery scheme featuring former FIFA presidential candidate Mohamed bin Hammam. To collect the data, I search the Dominica News Online database for all the available news articles published on the issue. As part of my content analysis, I utilize a customized thematic framework based on framing theory to identify the major frames. From my analysis, I conclude that overwhelmingly the coverage by the Dominica News Online presented the conflict more as a spectacle than as a complex narrative with deep context and relevant background information.
