This paper provides a detailed look at grassroots football efforts in Kisumu, Kenya. It examines the effect that the Kisumu Youth Football Association (KYFA) has had on individual youth development as well as community development. Also, the status of football at the national level has been found to impact the development of youth programs. In Kenya, the recent decline in nationwide football enthusiasm due to management problems is a crucial factor to the advancement of grassroots programs. This paper evaluates this effect on KYFA and if this organization has proven that football can be a successful means of improving the lives of the youth and implementing educational programs among them. It also suggests the variety of effects that youth football can have on children and how these effects can improve their lives. The issues faced by youth in Kisumu are discussed and put into a development context in order to analyze the influence that football has on the community. This study also discusses the international platform of sport and development and efforts specific to Africa and Kenya. A review of relevant literature provides background that is crucial to understanding the achievements of youth football in Kisumu. The educational opportunities that KYFA incorporates into football are also examined. This study concludes with a detailed account of the continuing success of KYFA and suggestions for improvement.
