I am a masters of Arts student at Kenyatta university studying African History of Kenyan sports particularly Kenyan athletics. My historical research approach is informed by theories and debates that have emerged out of the study of social history, post-colonial thoughts and gender studies as they relate to sports.

The Transformation of Sports in Elgeyo- Marakwet County, Kenya 1895-2010.

Kenya is currently  being recognized globally in the world map  of sports, especially in Athletics. Kenyan athletes have dominated local and international distance running in the recent years, since 1956 when they took  part for the    rst time in internationally at the Olympic Games. Among the areas in Kenya that has been  highly recognized in sports is Elgeyo-Marakwet County, due to its outstanding landmark contribution to the world history and development of sports. In more  recent time, the region has been thrust into international limelight for being a home  to international Olympic champions and World record  holders. Despite a glowing body of literature on sports in Elgeyo-marakwet County,Scholars have given little historical attention on sports, following a chronology of events to convey  a real change over time. With Elgeyo-Marakwet being the home  of several successful athletes understanding the    ner and apparent reasons for continued international successful sports men and women from relatively small region requires a more  detail  inquiry. This paper therefore interrogates the transformation of sports; speci  cally athletics in Elgeyo-Marakwet county, Kenya from 1895-2010.By analyzing the continuity  and change in Athletics in Elgeyo-Marakwet county  from pre-colonial, colonial and the post-independence period.   This study will rely on primary data from the    eld and archival materials as well as secondary texts. Ultimately this paper aims to contribute to the rich African histography of Sports history with speci  c reference to athletics in Africa. This study will therefore make  a contribution to the growing literature on sports history in Kenya by enhancing historical knowledge and position history as a medium of studying sports.
