Glocalization of Coach Education and Development in Zambia
The purpose of this abstract and presentation is to share current initiatives, and to raise some critical questions regarding coach education and development in Zambia. It is hoped that the presentation will provoke and generate a more active discourse that in the end will help tailor practical coach development routes relevant to local Zambian contexts and coaching needs.
It is a common perception in Zambia that our country has great athletes, but poor coaches. Having worked with sport coaches in Zambia for over a decade, I find this to be both untrue and unfortunate views. However, it is also my view that there are some systemic and structural limitations that over the years has shaped a culture of large-scale coach education solutions that might not be the in Zambia’s best interests.
Glocalization is a concept that emanates from the Japanese word dochakuka, and means global localization. The concept was in used to describe adaptation of farming techniques to local conditions, and became a buzzword when Japanese business adopted it in the 1980s. While there are plenty successful examples of glocalization and alteration of global concepts and standards in both business coaching, the question is what is it that inhibits the dochakuka processes in coach education and development in Zambia.
It is important get a good understanding of current coach education and development status in Zambia by examining both the coaching context and culture with some historical perspective. It is also interesting to study successful organizations or countries that has gone through similar processes to see what can be learnt from them. Some critical questions to guide the process;
