ABSTRACT:

“Hope between mountains in sport: a case study of Wooldridge”

Noluntu Dyubhele, Department of Economics – Nelson Mandela University

Despite 28 years of democracy and gender research, rural women in rural communities still do not have the means of participating in sport. Their quality of life is not improving yet they continue to bring hope to their households. Sport development has favoured urban areas at the expense of rural areas. Sport activities are declining and do not generate income on their own. The objective of the study was to identify the constraints to sport participation among rural women in the Wooldridge community in the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. A total of 60 rural women participated in the study. A questionnaire was used to collect data. Results indicated that the constraints to sport participation were lack of sport facilities, lack of equipment, commitments to household chores, lack of support, lack of skills, customary laws and lack of financial assistance. The results of the study provide implications for sport development in rural areas. It is evident from the study that rural women cannot survive without the support from government. The government must make genuine efforts to address the constraints that undermine the efforts of rural women. Rural women can participate in sport if they are empowered. Participation in sport is an important route to improve their quality of life.
Key words: constraints, participation in sport, quality of life, rural women, Wooldridge
