Legal problems for Youth Sport – Is better Coach education the solution?

This paper draws upon series of workshops and seminars held with educator- coaches and other parties involved with Youth Sport in South Africa. It explores the extent to which those concerned with the delivery of youth sport feel they have a lack of understanding of how to deal with a range of ‘legal’ issues such as potential personal injury litigation, parental behaviours and safeguarding. It outlines the findings of interviews and questionnaires and discusses whether the key to promoting greater educator-coach confidence lies in continuing education. It discusses how such education might be instigated and the barriers that exist.
